Religious Education during Covid-19

While we are attempting to curb the spread of Covid-19, we are cancelling in-person Religious Education programming; however, we are still there for you and your kids! In fact, we’re going ramping up services to help with the cabin fever and distress your kids may experience over the next several weeks.  Our goal is that we provide as much engagement for kids as possible during this time. We want to make sure kids are able to have some structured interaction with leaders and other kids in their lives, and we also want to make sure we give parents a much needed break (and help with providing interactive activities)!  So, here is a 4-fold plan.

  1. Sunday Morning RE on Zoom: Until further notice, RE will be at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings through ZOOM.  The session will be 30 minutes. Parents can log their kid(s) on at Usually kids will be encouraged to do the assignment on their own and then email it (or a picture of it) to the me at  To see what we do each week (and get any resources mentioned during service), see our Zoom RE Resource page!

  2. Big Kids Film Chat.  On Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. I will host a “Big Kids Film Chat” on zoom at for kids aged 8-12. I will announce the video for the upcoming week each Sunday. All films will be available to stream on Amazon or Netflix (some will be free through Prime).  Big Kid participants should watch the movie before our 10:00 a.m. chat! I’ll do my best to select free/low cost films, but some will cost a rental fee. If cost is a barrier please contact me privately for solutions.

    • Tuesday, March 17: Kindness is Contagious (Free on TubiTV)

    • Tuesday, March 24: Ladies First (Netflix)

    • Tuesday, March 31: Be the Change: A New Kind of Climate Documentary (Amazon)

  3. Bedtime with the DRE.  Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (through April 2nd). At 8:00 p.m. join me for storytime for kids aged 3-8 (or whoever would like to listen). Each bedtime session will last approximately 15-20 minutes.

  4. Pals Program:Adults and youth who are members or regular attendees at Maumee Valley Unitarian Universalist Congregation (MVUUC), may participate in the Pals program.  The program will pair older adults with kids, and even older kids with younger kids. You can be BOTH a pal to a younger kid AND get a pal (e.g., get paired up with an older teen or adult.)

To register, please sign up here: Sarah Rainey-Smithback, the Director of Religious Education at MVUUC, will review applications and make appropriate matches.

Pals sessions should be 1-2 times per week, at a regularly scheduled time. They should last no more than 30 minutes, and utilize the Zoom platform.

All Pals members should follow the following guidelines:

  1. Content of conversations: The conversations should stay focused on the agreed upon content.  In other words, if the Pals pair is matched up to discuss crochet/knitting, or learning Spanish, the conversations should stay focused on those topics as much as possible.  We understand that as your relationship develops, other topics may come up, but please do try to keep the conversation focused, and limited to 30 minutes (Zoom limits free account users to 40 minutes at a time anyway). Under no circumstances should adults discuss or show images issues related to sex or sexuality with minors in the program.  Adults who do this will be immediately reported to authorities.

  2. Parental controls and monitoring: Pals sessions should not be considered appropriate childcare. Parents are permitted to record Zoom conversations, and they may be reviewed by parents to make sure content is appropriate and children are safe. It is also recommended that a guardian/adult be present in the home when children are using Zoom with the Pal.  You do not necessarily have to be right next to the child, but present and in ear-shot is a good idea.
